My Tools

Interactive tools I have built for thinking about geochemistry, the elements and isotope systems I work with, and the instruments I measure them on.

Elements and isotope systems

How each element behaves in planets and meteorites, and the isotope systems I work with. Switch layers to read about Goldschmidt classes and volatility below the table, and click any of my isotope systems to open its card. Open it full screen.

Mass spectrometers

How I measure isotope ratios on two kinds of instrument. A gas source IRMS takes light elements in as a purified gas, and an MC-ICP-MS takes metals like potassium in as a dilute acid solution. Click any part of either instrument to see what it does. Open it full screen.

Building the machines

Experimentalists have always built their own instruments, and most of the classic machines of experimental geochemistry can still be built by hand from common laboratory materials. These panels redraw the machines of Holloway and Wood (1988), Simulating the Earth: Experimental Geochemistry, with the source figure and page cited on each, and connect them to the gas-melt, fluid-rock, redox, and sulfidation reactions I study.
